Researchers have found an unexpected effect of probiotics!

Want to improve your lung health? You need to first support your gut health with probiotics, says a new study presented at the Digestive Disease Week conference. This is a rather surprising effect of probiotics that confirms their role in respiratory infections. The unexpected effect of probiotics and its role in lung health.

The study authors conducted a second analysis of detailed daily diaries belonging to 220 patients who participated in previous research that focused on probiotics and weight loss. Looking at common symptoms of respiratory tract infections (cough, sore throat and wheezing), the researchers found that participants who took probiotics over the course of the study (six months) had a 27% lower incidence of upper respiratory tract-related events compared to the placebo group. This effect was more pronounced in participants aged 45 years or older, as well as in those with obesity. Obese people are at a higher risk of developing respiratory infections, this is a fact. Although previous research has shown the effect of probiotics in reducing upper respiratory tract infections in healthy adults and children, data is still lacking for the vulnerable population, namely the elderly, obese and overweight.

“These results reinforce the growing interest in the digestive tract-lung axis, i.e., how they communicate with each other,” said the study’s lead author, Dr. Benjamin Mullish. The researchers did not assess immune response, but only respiratory symptoms. According to Mullish, future randomized clinical trials would be needed to identify the mechanisms related to the reduction of respiratory symptoms and to better understand the effect of potential probiotics on the immune system. What other benefits of taking probiotics?Taking probiotics not only supports the gut flora, but can also help fight allergic disorders, colds and obesity. In addition, they are being studied for their potential to prevent inflammatory arthritis and cancer. Needless to mention, they are effective in the treatment of diarrhea and irritable bowel syndrome.
