Antibiotics for children – what to consider?

When the pediatrician prescribes an antibiotic, it often triggers mixed feelings among parents: Of course, you want to see your child healthy again as quickly as possible; on the other hand, you are justifiably concerned about the side effects. It often turns out that parents are insufficiently informed about the use and effects of antibiotics.

When visiting the doctor with their sick offspring, parents – understandably – often express the desire for a fast-acting drug, and so antibiotics are frequently prescribed in childhood, but in many cases they are not effective. Therapy with antibiotics is generally appropriate when the illness is based on a bacterial infection. However, most illnesses, such as colds or flu-like infections that children bring home from kindergarten or school, are caused by viruses – and even the strongest antibiotics are ineffective against them. Nevertheless, in 2010, children between the ages of 3 and 6 were prescribed antibiotics more frequently than adults, which can have massive consequences, especially for the little ones: In addition to the pathogens, antibiotics invariably destroy the intestinal flora that is so important for life as a whole. This is particularly dramatic for children, because healthy intestinal flora is not fully developed until the age of 7. The administration of antibiotics in childhood increases the risk of chronic intestinal diseases, hypersensitivity reactions and thus increased tendency to allergies (asthma) and rashes such as neurodermatitis.

Careful use of antibiotics

Infections of the upper respiratory tract, bladder infections or tonsillitis, on the other hand, are often caused by bacteria, but here too the use of antibiotics is not always necessary and should be carefully considered by the doctor. A good way to identify bacterial pathogens is the so-called CRP rapid test, which requires only a small prick of the finger: In the case of a bacterial inflammation, the C-reactive protein rises rapidly, a high value is therefore a good indicator of a bacterial infection. If it makes sense to administer an antibiotic, there are a few things to keep in mind when taking it: The dosage of the drug is calculated taking into account the body weight and should be followed exactly. The time at which the medicine is taken is also important: whether it is taken on an empty stomach, after a meal or independently of it influences both the effect and the side effects. The package insert, doctor or pharmacist can provide reliable information on this.

Probiotics for children

Plenty of rest, sleep and a vitamin-rich diet support the little body on the road to recovery. It is important not to discontinue the medication prematurely, even if the child is already feeling better after a short time. Doing so risks the survival of resistant bacteria that can multiply and become insensitive to the antibiotic. In most cases, children recover quickly after taking antibiotics – but the intestinal flora may be permanently damaged. Therefore, whenever antibiotics are taken, the little body should also be supported with suitable probiotics, during and after antibiotic therapy, in order to rebuild the “health center” in the intestine. We recommend to take 2-3 table spoons after each meal. Colondrink has 900 trillion good bacteria and 27 strains. One bottle is enough for more than a week. We highly recommend to take at least 1 month of colon drink.
